• 90ies

    National Olympic committee was organized. It was recognized as an International Olympic committee in 1993. In 1992 Ukrainian athletes were on the united team.

  • 1994

    In 1994 thirty seven athletes represented Ukraine in the Olympic Games. The first Olympic medal for independent Ukraine was won by figure-skater Oksana Baiul. Valentyna Tserbe brought a bronze medal in biathlon from the U.S.A.

  • 1996

    For the first time the national team of Ukraine was sent off to the Olympic Games at the Independence Square. The Ukrainian athletes won 23 medals, including 9 gold, 2 silver and 12 bronze medals and they were the ninth in non-official team placing. Lidia Podkopaieva became an absolute championess. Kateryna Serebrianska got a gold medal in eurhythmics. Volodymyr Klychko won a gold medal in Atlanta.

  • 1997

    Valeriy Vasyliovych Lobanovskyi came back to his dear team “Dynamo” from Middle East. Thanks to his talents and efforts the club was again among the best European football teams.

  • 1998

    In the Olympic Games held in Nagano Ukrainian athletes took part in ten kinds of sports and in 40 items on the program; they got only one silver medal thanks to Olena Petrova (biathlon).

  • 1999

    In 1999 “Dynamo” was through to the semifinal of the League Championship having outplayed “Arsenal” – 3:1 (goal scorers were Golovko, Rebrov, Shevchenko), French “Lance” – 3:1 (goal scorers Kaladze, Baschuk, Shevchenko), “Panatinaikos” (goal scorers were Rebrov, Basinas – auto-goal), having tied the score with “Lance” and “Arsenal” – 1:1, having lost a game with “Panatinaikos” as a visiting team – 2:1 (goal scorer was Rebrov). In ¼ as a visiting team “Dynamo” tied the score with Madrid “Real” – 1:1, and in Kyiv the team won the game – 2:0 (goal scorer was Shevchenko). In the semifinal the club lost the game with Munich “Bavaria” – 3:4.

  • 2000

    Two hundred and thirty five (235) Ukrainians participated in the summer Olympic Games in Sydney. They won 23 medals, including 3 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals, and they were the thirteenth in non-official team placing. Yana Klochkova won two gold medals and Mykola Milchev got one gold medal

  • 2002

    In 2002 Ukraine’s national team participated in the winter Olympic Games in Salt-Lake-City; however, no medals were won.

  • 2004

    In 2004 Ukrainian athletes won 9 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze medals in the Olympic Games held in Athens. Having been given two more gold medals, Yana Klochkova became a four-time Olympic championess; no one broke the record in this country yet. For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games Iryna Merleni got a gold medal in freestyle wrestling among women.

  • 2006

    Our athletes won two bronze medals in the Olympic Games held in Turin: Lilia Yefremova – biathlon, Olena Hrushyna and Ruslan Honcharov – figure-skating. Ukraine’s national football team, headed by Oleh Blokhin, was a success in qualifying matches and it was the first one among Europeans teams to participate in World Football Championship-2006 in Germany. Our team was in qualifying group № 2, its competitors were Greece (Euro-2004 champion), Turkey (bronze prize-winner of WCh-2002) and a well-trained national team of Denmark.

  • 2008

    The Ukrainian athletes ascended a pedestal twenty seven times in the summer Olympic Games which took place in Beijing: they won 7 gold, 5 silver and 15 bronze medals. Our female team in saber-fencing became a championship of the Games: Olha Kharlan, Olena Khomrova, Halyna Pundyk, Olha Zhovnir. Artur Aivazian and Oleksandr Petriv won a gold medal in bullet shooting, and Viktor Ruban – in archery. Natalia Dobrynska was second to none in heptathlon, and Inna Osypenko-Rodomska was the best in kayak racing and canoeing. Vasyl Lomachenko got a gold medal in boxing.

  • 2009

    Ukraine’s female national team in saber-fencing continued their triumphant progress, and came victorious in world and European championships. 2009 was the year of Donetsk “Shakhtar” – the miners won the UEFA cup. The football battle took place in Stambul, the competitor was Bremen “Verder”. Generally the competition among football clubs in Ukraine is very severe; however then the whole country supported “Shakhtar”.

  • 2010

    In 2010 Ukraine was represented by 45 athletes (24 men and 21 women) in 4 kinds of sport in the winter Olympic Games. Unfortunately no medals were received. Andriy Deryzemlia showed the best result and took the fifth place in biathlon sprint. Ukrainian Olympic team won 96 medals in the summer and 5 medals in the winter Olympic Games during the whole period of its history.

  • 2012

    Europe’s Football Championship-2012 is the 14th European Championship which is held once in four years under UEFA aegis. Two countries, Ukraine and Poland, are in charge of the tournament, the time terms are June 8 – July 1, 2012. This is the third event in the history of European national football competitions when two countries host a championship. The first example was the championship of Europe in 2000 held in Belgium and the Netherlands; the second one was the championship of Europe in 2008 held in Austria and Switzerland.
